Quick and Healthy Homemade Dog Treat Recipes

You don’t have to be a talented baker to whip up these delicious and affordable treats for your pup.

Classic Peanut Butter

These classic peanut butter treats from SimplificLife are a breeze to make! They contain only 4 ingredients that you likely already have in your kitchen cabinet, which means your wallet AND your pup will thank you!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of whole wheat flour
  • 1 and ½ teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1/3 cup of peanut butter
  • 1 cup of skim milk or hot (not boiling) water

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with tinfoil or parchement paper and set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and baking powder.
  • Add the milk/hot water and peanut butter.
  • Carefully mix the wet and dry ingredients. If the dough is too dry, add a little more milk/water. If it’s too wet, add an additional tablespoon of flour.
  • Roll out the dough with a rolling pin. Use cookie cutters or shape treats into small balls. Place the treats on the cookie sheet, leaving space as they will spread and rise.
  • Bake for 20 minutes. Allow to cool.

Banana Carrot

These delicious banana carrot treats from Homemade Dog Treats Now pack a nutritious punch in just a couple of bites! Fill your pup up with soluble fibre, potassium and antioxidants without a worry – he/she will never know the difference 😉

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup of oatmeal
  • 1 banana
  • 2 carrots
  • 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon of brown sugar (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of parsley
  • 1 egg

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 50 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with tinfoil or parchment paper and set aside.
  • Shred carrots on grater or in food processor.
  • Puree banana in blender or food processor until smooth.
  • Combine all ingredients in a medium sized bowl and stir until well combined.
  • Flip dough out onto a well-floured surface and press flat to a ¼’’ to ½’’ thickness. Cut out using a cookie cutter.
  • Bake for 30 minutes. You can pull the treats out at this point for a slightly soft cookie or turn off the oven, crack the door, and allow the treats to remain in the over for an additional 20 minutes to harden.

Pumpkin and Apple

Pumpkin has long been recognised as a nutritional powerhouse for dogs, quickly soothing any stomach and digestive issues. However, some dogs don’t like the taste of pumpkin. These pumpkin and apple treats bring a little extra sweetness (and Vitamins A and C) to the table that your dog will love!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of oatmeal
  • 1 medium apple (note: it’s important that the core and seeds are removed as they can make your dog sick!)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of canned pumpkin

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with tinfoil or parchment paper and set aside.
  • Grind the oatmeal down in a food processor or blender. Transfer to a mixing bowl.
  • Core the apple, being sure to remove all the seeds and core. Grate the apple and add to the bowl.
  • Add the egg and canned pumpkin and mix well to combined.
  • Dust a flat surface with oatmeal and roll the dough out to be approximately ½’’ thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut the dough into shapes and transfer to baking sheet.
  • Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden and crispy. Allow to cool and store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Carrot and Sweet Potato

These carrot and sweet potato treats from Proud Dog Mom are packed full of veggies and free of preservatives, chemicals, and other harmful ingredients. What more could you (and your dog) ask for!?

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup of baked sweet potato
  • ½ cup of finely shredded carrots
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup of water

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with tinfoil or parchment paper and set aside.
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sweet potato, carrots, egg, and water. Mix well until all the ingredients are combined.
  • Knead until you get a big ball of dough. Flatten it out with your hands or a rolling pin until it’s about ¼’’ thick.
  • Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter and place treats onto the cookie sheet.
  • Bake for approximately 30 minutes, until the treats are golden. Allow to cool and store in an airtight container for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months.

Bacon Dog Treats

Who can say no to bacon?? Your dog is guaranteed to gobble up these delicious and simple treats by Dukes and Duchesses in no time!

Ingredients:

  • 3 and ½ cups of whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of skim milk powder
  • 1/3 cup of bacon drippings
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of cold water

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with tinfoil or parchment paper and set aside.
  • Combine both flours and milk powder in a large bowl.
  • Drizzle with fat.
  • Add egg and cold water and mix well to form dough.
  • Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and roll out to ½ inch thickness.
  • Cut with cookie cutters and place on cookie sheet.
  • Bake for 60 minutes. Allow to cool.
